From Philadelphia the Sensations began their recording career in the
mid 50s on the Atco label. Baker is well known on the rare soul scene
for the classic ’You didn’t say a word’ on Parkway. This however is a
cover version of the Lorraine Chandler classic. Yvonne’s track was
issued twice on the ‘Junior’ label around 1969 and both sank without
trace. For me Bakers version just wins out with her stronger vocals, and
the flip side ‘Mend the torn pieces’ is also a strong vocal worthy of a
listen. Incidentally Chandler also covered ‘Mend the torn pieces’. Both
tracks are Terry & Ashford compositions.
Baker also had releases on Argo & Modern records. I am not sure if
the Sensations were the same group to appear on ‘Way out’ records.
